Fabrics & Their Influence On Our Vitality

Updated: Jan 16, 2025

The human bodies largest organ is the skin. Covering the entire body, the skin is a protective barrier against external threats such as chemicals and microplasts. Caring for ones skin is crucial for maintaining its integrity and functionality.

The choice of fabrics and materials used in clothing and undergarments can have a significant impact on our skins health. Synthetic fibers are considered toxic to humans for a few reasons:

  1. Toxic Chemicals

Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon and spandex are derived from chemical processes, rather than from natural sources like plants or animals. They are often treated with additional chemicals that add desirable properties to the material; however, using these chemicals can lead to skin irritation, respiratory issues, and even cancer, especially in hot weather, where synthetics begin to break down. Some of the hazardous chemicals that can be found in synthetic fabrics like polyester include:

  • Antimony is used to make fire-retardant materials and is known to cause cancer. It is also released into the air and water during production.

  • PFOA is used to make fabrics waterproof and has been linked to thyroid disease, cancer, and reproductive problems.

  • Formaldehyde is a finishing agent in polyester and nylon production, which is linked to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and cancer.

  • Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are used to make polyester stain-resistant and have been associated with various health concerns.

  • BPA improves the lifespan of fabrics and creates anti-static properties often found in synthetic materials.

  • Phthalates is a plasticizer used to make plastics pliable. Studies have shown phthalates to disrupt normal reproductive development and function.

  1. Microplastics

Microplastic pollution has a growing impact on our lives. We now estimates that each person consumes, on average, up to a credit card’s worth (0.17 ounces) of microplastics by weight every week. Microplastic fibers represent 35%, meaning the clothing we wear, and wash has a direct impact on our microfiber pollution. How about its impacting our health?

Where are microplastics found in the human body?

Every year, new research reveals the growing extent of human exposure to microplastics. A landmark 2021 study discovered microplastics in human placentas. Soon after, researchers in Germany and Austria found microplastics in meconium, a newborn’s first stool. In 2022, a study involving 34 healthy mothers in Italy revealed that 75% of breast milk samples contained microplastics. This evidence indicates that babies are ingesting these particles even before birth, posing a significant threat to human health. A more recent study found microplastics in human testicles, leading toxicologists to announce they now expect to find microplastics in every part of the human body.

Now that we are aware of the harmful affects, what now?

  1. Embracing a Healthier Wardrobe: Steps to Reduce Toxin Exposure

It's fantastic that you're taking steps to create a healthier environment for yourself! Here are some practical ways to implement changes in your daily life to consume and absorb fewer toxins from clothing:

1. Choose Natural Fibers

Opt for clothing made from organic cotton, linen, hemp, or bamboo. These materials are not only biodegradable but also free from harmful chemicals used in conventional farming.

2. Research Brands

Support brands that prioritize sustainability and transparency. Look for companies that provide information about their materials and manufacturing processes, ensuring they align with your values.

3. Wash with Care

Use gentle, eco-friendly detergents and avoid fabric softeners that may contain harmful chemicals. Washing clothes in cold water can also help reduce energy consumption and preserve fabric integrity

.

4. Embrace Second-Hand Shopping

Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online resale platforms offer a treasure trove of pre-loved clothing. Not only does this reduce waste, but it also allows you to find unique pieces without the toxic burden of new production.

5. DIY and Upcycling

Get creative by upcycling old clothes or making your own garments. This not only reduces your exposure to toxins but also allows for self-expression and creativity!

6. Air Out New Clothes

Before wearing new garments, let them air out for a few days to reduce the presence of any residual chemicals from manufacturing. This simple step can make a significant difference.

7. Educate Yourself

Stay informed about the materials and practices used in the fashion industry. Knowledge empowers you to make better choices and advocate for healthier alternatives.

8. Mindful Consumption

Practice mindful consumption by evaluating your clothing needs. Invest in quality pieces that you truly love and will wear often, rather than succumbing to fast fashion trends.

9. Create a Capsule Wardrobe

Consider building a capsule wardrobe with versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched. This not only simplifies your choices but also reduces the number of items you need to purchase.

10. Share and Inspire

Share your journey towards a toxin-free wardrobe with friends and family. Inspire others to make mindful choices, and together, you can create a positive ripple effect!

By taking these steps, you are not only protecting your health but also contributing to a more sustainable and beautiful world. Every small change counts, and your efforts are a beacon of positivity!
